Dear incoming Longhorns,
I don’t know if you always planned on coming to the University of Texas, but I will tell you that I did not. I thought I wanted to go to school outside of Texas, far, far away from home, just because I could. Then, I visited Austin. I saw that Austin was a place like no other. A city that feels like magic and music and possibility all in one, but also feels like it has always been your home.
Every day I spend in Austin, I see something, or try something, or meet someone new. I’ve now finished half of my time at UT and it feels like I have barely scraped the surface. Not a day goes by that doesn’t feel like excitement.
I happened to be a lucky winner of tickets to see Jimmy Kimmel at UT this past fall, where Matthew McConaughey described Austin by saying “no one is too good, but everyone is good enough”. It is a place where people from all over the world have come to learn, grow, explore, find themselves, become themselves, exist as the person they love to be, and everyone is better because of it.
When I’m not doing schoolwork, going to football games, or at DG functions, you can most likely find me with my friends somewhere in the city. Some of my favorites would have to be Lady Bird Lake Trail for one of the most incredible sunsets I have ever seen, Barton Springs, and of course, Zilker Park. Once I went to a Corgi meet up, and I can tell you with complete honesty it was one of the most surreal moments of my existence. And make sure to pencil in some study dates at The Austin Public Library- absolutely unbeatable view!
The Austin food scene is out of this world, and the live music is off the charts. I think it's safe to say I have tried more restaurants and been to more concerts throughout my time in Austin than probably my whole life. Looking for a burger recommendation? Casino El Camino on dirty sixth is the place to be. We are so lucky as Longhorns to have both such a beautiful campus, as well as an entire city to explore. Most people will tell you that college will be the best years of your life, and I can’t imagine a better place than Austin, Texas to spend those years. We are so excited for you to start adventuring and find all your new favorite places!
