Just a small town girl...livin' in a DG world

Accepted into the best university in the state of Texas, attempting to find yourself as you navigate adulthood (whoa) and on top of it all -- you’re faced with this life changing week that will find you sisters for life. Welcome to college, and welcome to recruitment! If you’re overwhelmed trying to understand what to expect from UT Recruitment, I was 100% right there with you.

I grew up in Seguin, Texas: Home of the World’s Largest Pecan! (If you know where that is, I would be thoroughly surprised.) Small town girl headed to big ‘ol Austin, I signed up for recruitment with no idea what to do and a lot of hope that I’d find thoughtful, driven women who could appreciate frequent dad jokes. (spoiler alert: I definitely found them.) I bought some dresses, ran around West Campus for a week and before I knew it it was Bid Day and I was sitting on an envelope in Hogg Auditorium ready to know what lifelong sisterhood I’d have the honor of joining.

Along the way there are definitely a few tricks to make your time a little easier, and as a seasoned pro I’ve got them all. Don’t lose your name tag on the first day, and have to wear a Post-It note through Open House. Do bring a notepad to recap your experience after every round. (There are a lot of girls’ names and greek letters that all end up sounding the same!) Don’t worry too much about having every hair and eyelash looking picture perfect at any given time. We’re girls! We know the struggle. Do look and act just like yourself, because, as corny as it sounds, that’s the girl we’re looking for!

During this process, you can definitely expect a ***rush*** of emotions. It’s totally normal to feel nervous or even intimidated, but take a breath because secret’s out: sororities are just as nervous as y’all are! Just like you, we’re looking to put our best face forward, but more than anything we are behind our doors hoping you find your home just like we did.

Luckily for me, I found my home running down Rio Grande on Bid Day with my anchor held up high! Although I had that infamous feeling of “just knowing” you’ve found the sorority for you, I had no idea what was to come.

It was at our chapter meetings I realized my sisters are the most incredible, unique group of women I never knew existed. These are leaders, building each other up with an unspoken yet established standard of utmost character. These are scholars who define academic excellence, who earned the #1 GPA not only of University Panhellenic, but all Greek organizations on our campus this spring! These are friends of the Texas School of Blind and Visually Impaired, being truly active in philanthropy and taking pride in sisterhood centered around service. Needless to say, after my first year, strangers became sisters, sisters became role models and deciding my major became deciding what field I know I’ll kick ass in, and that’s why I fell in love with Delta Gamma. For this kind of sisterhood, I’d take on the chaos of recruitment a hundred times again.

So strap in, and prepare yourself for a week unlike any other!

From Greek life’s #1 believer and all the sisters at Delta Gamma, we truly wish you luck during your recruitment and hope you find sisters just like we did.
